The Reckoning by John Grisham Summary
“The Reckoning” is a legal thriller novel written by bestselling author John Grisham. It is set in the fictional town of Clanton, Mississippi, in the aftermath of World War II, and centers around the murder of a well-respected local war hero, Pete Banning. The novel was published in 2018, and it received mixed reviews from critics and readers alike.
The story begins with Pete Banning shooting and killing Reverend Dexter Bell, his longtime friend and the town’s most prominent pastor. Banning is immediately arrested and charged with murder, but he refuses to offer any explanation for his actions. The first part of the novel focuses on the trial and the legal proceedings surrounding the murder case. We learn that Banning was a decorated war hero, who fought in the Pacific during World War II and was held as a prisoner of war in Japan. He returned home to Clanton and took over his family’s cotton plantation, which had fallen into disrepair during his absence.
As the trial progresses, we see that Banning’s defense team is struggling to come up with a viable defense strategy. Banning refuses to testify or provide any explanation for his actions, and the evidence against him seems overwhelming. However, the trial takes a surprising turn when Banning’s daughter, Stella, testifies in his defense and reveals a shocking family secret that sheds new light on the murder case.
The second part of the novel takes us back in time to Banning’s experiences during World War II. We see the horrors of war through his eyes and witness the atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers against him and his fellow prisoners. We also learn about Banning’s personal life, including his marriage to Liza, his love for his children, and his strained relationship with his father, who was also a war veteran.
The final part of the novel returns to the present day, and we see the aftermath of the trial and the impact it has had on the town of Clanton. The novel ends with a twist that is both unexpected and satisfying. You may also like The Earl Next Door by Ashtyn Newbol
Overall, “The Reckoning” is a well-written and engaging novel that combines elements of legal thriller, historical fiction, and family drama. Grisham’s writing is crisp and effective, and he does a great job of weaving together the different threads of the story. However, some readers may find the novel’s slow pacing and heavy focus on World War II to be a bit tedious. Nevertheless, if you are a fan of Grisham’s work or enjoy legal thrillers in general, “The Reckoning” is definitely worth checking out.
